Twenty-six Model United Nations students traveled to Chicago to compete in the American Model United Nations (AMUN) Conference.

Twenty-six Model United Nations students, accompanied by Professor Jeffrey Roberg (political science), traveled to Chicago to compete in the American Model United Nations (AMUN) Conference Nov. 23-26. Carthage students represented the People’s Republic of China and Indonesia at this conference.

Nathan Swensen ’25 (left) and Lorin Bucur ’26 (right) received the Outstanding Delegation Award. With very little sleep, but good diplomatic skills, our students tackled issues of international importance such as: disarmament and chemical weapons, agricultural development and development in middle-income countries, rights of indigenous peoples and literacy, the right to a sustainable development, safety and security of humanitarian personnel, empowering people for ensuring inclusiveness and equality, science and technology for development, equal access to justice for all, combatting transnational organized crime and corruption, global strategy for women’s and children’s health, public health and the world drug problem, Palestinian membership in the UN, resolving the Israel-Lebanon border, Sudan’s civil war, and in the 1961 Security Council Simulation a crisis in the Congo following Prime Minister Lumumba’s death and UN General Secretary Hammarskjöld’s plane crash.

Michael Malyszek ’25 (left) and Veeti Penttinen ’25 (right) received the Outstanding Delegation Award. While at AMUN, Carthage Model UN students joined 995 students from 69 colleges and universities from across the United States and the world who worked to solve problems and tried to “get their way.” In the process, Carthage Model UN students won the following two awards at AMUN:

Lorin Bucur ’26 and Nathan Swensen ’25 for their exceptional representation of the People’s Republic of China in the Security Council
Michael Malyszek ’25 and Veeti Penttinen ’25 for their exceptional representation of the People’s Republic of China in the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

Representing the country of the People’s Republic of China: Sarah Beck ’27, Lorin Bucur ’26, Claire Guenther ’25, Emma Murphy ’25, Michael Malyszek ’25, Nick Murray ’26, Veeti Penttinen ’25, Jay Perrone ’26, Amber Pico ’26, Brandon Swensen ’25, Nathan Swensen ’25, Michael Vo ’27, Jeffrey White ’27, and Maya Zenner ’26.

Representing the country of Indonesia: Hana Adler ’26, Spencer George ’26, Basil Kiracofe ’26, Azahna Luschen ’27, Kenzie Manke ’27, Anika Peterson ’27, Marion Pognat ’26, Oliver Prus ’27, Raymond Scholz ’28, Sarah Smith ’25, and Ciara Woodring ’28.

These students represent 23 majors and nine minors from across the College, including accounting, allied health science, Asian studies, biology, business administration, chemistry, Chinese, criminal justice, communications, computer science, data science, economics, education, English, environmental science, finance, French, graphic design, healthcare administration, history, international political economy, Japanese, music, neuroscience, political science, public relations, studio art, theatre, and women’s and gender studies.

Model UN helps students to sharpen their “hard” and “soft” skills through research, writing, public speaking (in front of large groups), and diplomacy (by working in smaller groups). In addition to helping students build and refine these skills, they also see an increase in confidence in presenting their views in a potentially stressful environment. Model UN is open to students of all majors.
